1) Global Recognition – Rising from humble beginnings, Prof. Dr. Abdul Mu’ti became the youngest and first Asian appointed as an Advisor to the British Council, establishing early international credibility and moral authority in education.; 2) Transformative Global Learning – His overseas education reshaped his intellectual outlook, embedding academic rigor, cross-cultural understanding, and a global mindset grounded in values and lifelong learning.; 3) Enduring Institutional Leadership – As the longest-serving Secretary General of Muhammadiyah, he strengthened governance, expanded global engagement, and positioned the organization as a progressive force in education and interfaith dialogue.; 4) National Educational Stewardship – As Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, he converts personal values and institutional experience into inclusive, future-oriented national education reform, shaping Indonesia’s next generation.
He is a native Indonesian; fluent in English and Arabic.
He enjoys reading and writing as lifelong intellectual practices, alongside singing across various musical genres, including dangdut, jazz, and pop. He maintains physical well-being through football, volleyball, badminton, and regular walking. Grounded in everyday community life, he values simple social interactions—spending time with neighbors, using public transportation such as the MRT and ride-hailing services, and staying socially present. These routines reflect his belief that leadership is a trust, not a privilege, and that public office is temporary—an opportunity to serve, remain humble, and continuously strive to do good and become better.
One of the most formative moments in his life was receiving his mother’s permission to continue his studies after completing his undergraduate degree. As the first person from his village to attend university, he carried his parents’ aspirations for him to become a teacher and civil servant, and came to deeply value the power of parental prayers. He grew up in a rural village where electricity arrived only in 1990 and was often unreliable. Those conditions shaped his aspiration to become “a glass roof tile”—someone who brings light to others. Studying on scholarships from undergraduate level onward, he joined a faculty development program and was later selected by the Ministry of Religious Affairs as one of Indonesia’s top graduates to study abroad. Despite completing his degree under tight timelines, he ultimately earned a full scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in Australia.; Since the early 1990s, organizational involvement shaped his leadership and reaffirmed his parents’ ideals of education, service, and contribution. A defining test of values came when, as Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah, he was encouraged to run for Parliament with strong political support. While his wife agreed, his father withheld consent. In keeping with Javanese cultural values, he chose to step aside—not out of fear of failure, but out of respect for parental authority. He continued his path in academia and Muhammadiyah, where teaching and religious service brought his family the greatest pride. Guided by the same principles, he later declined an offer to serve as Vice Minister during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 period, affirming his belief that leadership is grounded in values, not position.
Public speaking; interfaith dialogue; community service; social empowerment initiatives; mentoring youth in education and leadership.
He attributes his success to three enduring principles. First, he consistently strives to give his best in every responsibility, working to the fullest of his abilities. Second, he never moves forward without seeking the prayers and blessings of his parents, which he considers a vital source of strength and guidance. Third, he entrusts every step of his journey to God through sincere prayer, believing that true success is shaped not only by effort, but by divine wisdom guiding each decision.
