Early detection of eye diseases and vision problems among Malaysian Family members. Based on the National Eye Survey I & II, 86.3% of blindness problems can be avoided through early detection and treatment. The public health system in Malaysia prioritizes the concept of "Treatment After Sickness" over "Effects Before Sickness". This is clearly seen through the data of eye patients who attend both public and private health facilities, ie eye patients who attend already have a risk of blindness whether they can be treated or not. At the same time, we see the rate of use of resources to carry out early detection of eye and vision diseases is at an unsatisfactory level. Therefore, we hope that the resources available in the public & private sectors such as community nurses and optometrists can be used more optimally and comprehensively to reduce the number of avoidable blindness problems among the people; Reducing the waiting time and crowding of eye patients in public hospitals. If we visit eye clinics in public hospitals throughout Malaysia, one phenomenon that becomes common is the very long waiting time and crowding in eye clinic facilities. This is caused by all patient referral activities from medical practitioners to tertiary health care i.e. eye specialist clinics without screening by primary eye health service providers such as optometrists whether in the public or private sector; All parties are urged to use the primary eye health services available throughout Malaysia including optometric services. Optometrists are not only trained in screening and detecting eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, but also have knowledge in handling various eye health problems at the primary level. Increase the productivity and achievement of workers through good vision. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that untreated nearsightedness (URE) is a major contributor to the loss of productivity of workers worldwide. In 2010, lost productivity due to URE was estimated at USD272 billion. The 2020 World Vision Report estimates that 5 billion of the world's population will suffer from nearsightedness by the year 2050. We call on all parties to cooperate in ensuring that the people receive the best eye health and vision services; All parties including optometrists, ophthalmologists, and medical practitioners play a more holistic role in mobilizing energy to ensure vision problems can be detected early and eye diseases are screened at the primary level so that the productivity of the people is awake, In conclusion, we call on all parties to work together in empowering the delivery of eye and vision health care in Malaysia. The government is called upon to use all available resources including professionals in the private sector such as registered optometrists. Emphasis should be placed on the early detection of eye diseases in addition to preventive activities which are necessarily better than treating
