Alwi Shihab
Alwi Shihab’s life reflects a legacy of aspirations, resilience, and unwavering devotion to a promise. His father, a respected community figure in South Sulawesi, dreamed of sending his children to study in Egypt, an ambition he had never fulfilled himself. At just 12, Alwi left his family to pursue that dream. For nearly a decade, he lived far from home, overcoming limited scholarship support and working in European factories during summer breaks to support himself. In 1969, Alwi travelled to the United States to continue his education. With little financial support, he worked as a dishwasher at Grand Central Terminal in New York to fund his studies. However, widespread campus demonstrations disrupted his academic journey, forcing him to return to Indonesia. He subsequently devoted 17–18 years to business before recalling his promise to his parents to earn a doctoral degree. Determined to honour that commitment, he resumed his studies, proving that while circumstances may delay a dream, perseverance can keep it alive.
Prof. Dr. Alwi Shihab’s academic journey reflects his dedication to knowledge, intellectual growth, and the study of Islamic thought. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Al-Azhar University in 1968, followed by a master’s degree from IAIN Alauddin Ujung Pandang in 1986. In 1990, he pursued doctoral studies at Ain Shams University before continuing his academic development at Temple University, where he undertook master’s and doctoral studies from 1992 to 1995. His scholarly journey culminated in a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Divinity School from 1995 to 1996, further enriching his intellectual perspective and deepening his engagement with religious studies.
Prof. Dr. Alwi Shihab’s career reflects a distinguished blend of intellectual excellence, leadership, and service to the nation. He began as CEO of Glass Priangan Factory (1975–1979), followed by serving as President Director of Alfa Contracting Company (1979–1982) and PT Prima Advera (1982–1986). Since 1982, he has also founded and led the Darul Qur’an Foundation, dedicated to education and religious values. In academia, he lectured at Hartford Seminary (1998–2002). Since 2002, he has served as a lecturer and member of the Supervisory Board at the University of Indonesia. His career later expanded into politics after he helped establish the National Awakening Party (PKB). He served as Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs (1999–2001), Chairman of PKB (2001–2005), and Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare (2004–2005). On the international stage, since 2006, Alwi Shihab has served as the Special Envoy of the President of Indonesia to the Middle East and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Since 2007, he has also been a member of Medco Energi Indonesia’s Steering Committee. His cross-sector journey demonstrates a consistent commitment to integrating knowledge, diplomacy, leadership, and social service to strengthen inter-civilisational dialogue and advance Indonesia’s progress.
Prof. Dr. Alwi Shihab has received several prestigious honours in recognition of his contributions and service. These include the Imam Muhammad Abduh International Prize in 2020, the Bintang Mahaputera Adipradana in 2014, and two Portuguese distinctions in 2012: the Grand Cross of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator and the Medalha de Mérito Civil (Medal of Civil Merit). Collectively, these honours form a significant part of his distinguished record, reflecting recognition of his contributions at both national and international levels.
One of Alwi Shihab’s significant contributions was his initiative to promote descriptive, non-dogmatic religious education to strengthen mutual understanding and interfaith harmony. Inspired by his academic experience at Temple University, where religions were studied through their history, figures, and fundamental principles without judging other beliefs, he sought to introduce a similar approach in Indonesia. Through dialogue with religious leaders and government officials, his idea gained the support of President Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) and several members of his administration. This initiative led to the establishment of a religious and intercultural studies programme at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), which later developed through collaboration with other universities. Alwi regards this achievement not as a personal accomplishment alone, but as the result of collective efforts to foster mutual respect, interfaith understanding, and peaceful coexistence in a diverse society.
Proficient in Indonesian, English, and Arabic. His multilingual abilities have supported his academic and diplomatic endeavours, enabling him to bridge cultural and religious differences while fostering mutual understanding and strengthening international relations.
Maintaining his fitness is an integral part of his daily routine, through regular walking and gym sessions. His passion for football, which began during his university years, has remained with him ever since. A devoted Real Madrid supporter, he also enthusiastically follows Indonesia’s national team, embracing the excitement and spirit that make every match memorable.
In Alwi Shihab’s life, a setback became a defining moment that shaped his understanding of success. In 1970, his aspiration to earn a PhD in the United States remained unfulfilled. Rather than allowing disappointment to diminish his ambition, he transformed it into determination, devoting 17 years to the business world to build financial independence and create a path toward his academic dream. During this period, he achieved financial stability, acquired properties, and provided for his family. Yet, he came to realise that material prosperity was not the ultimate destination. An unfinished aspiration remained, reminding him of the purpose that had first set his journey in motion. The experience taught him that true success is measured not only by personal achievements, but also by devotion to God and filial piety. He sought to honour his parents’ wishes, including building them a home and enabling them to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. For Alwi, the prayers and blessings of parents are an invaluable source of grace. These are the values he continues to impart to younger generations and his students at the Islamic boarding school he established: never allow failure to extinguish ambition, turn adversity into the strength to rise again, and remain humble in the pursuit of success. Ultimately, Alwi believes that true success is measured not only by what one achieves, but by the faith one upholds, the parents one honours, and the lives one touches through service.
Alwi Shihab continues to dedicate himself to fostering interfaith harmony through his collaboration with the Leimena Institute in developing the Intercultural Religious Literacy Program. The initiative brings together teachers of Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism through regular lectures, seminars, and discussions. By broadening educators’ understanding of religious and cultural diversity, the program seeks to nurture tolerance, encourage respect for differences, and prevent intolerance among younger generations. Together with academics such as Amin Abdullah, Alwi continues to advance the initiative by engaging stakeholders in the fields of religion and education. The program has also attracted interest from ASEAN countries, including the Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Singapore, as well as Japan. Through these ongoing efforts, Alwi remains committed to strengthening interfaith dialogue and fostering harmonious coexistence, guided by the conviction that respecting diversity is a shared responsibility and a vital foundation for a peaceful future in a pluralistic society.
For Alwi Shihab, success begins with sincere intentions, a clear plan, and the determination to see it through. He believes that good intentions must be supported by careful preparation, disciplined effort, and perseverance. His aspiration to study in the United States began long before he mastered English; he planned, studied, worked, and saved until the opportunity became a reality. To him, ambition means little without the willingness to act consistently and overcome obstacles. Equally important is the ability to approach others with sincerity, respect, and an open heart. He believes that trust and cooperation can turn challenges into opportunities when people feel valued and understood. Above all, Alwi emphasises that a worthy goal must be pursued with integrity and a genuine desire to do good. For him, success is not simply about achieving what one sets out to accomplish, but about combining purposeful planning, tireless effort, faith, and consideration for others in every step of the journey. “Every meaningful journey begins with a sincere intention and a well-laid plan. When we walk with a pure heart, dedicate ourselves to helping others, and place our trust in God, He will illuminate our path and open doors where none seemed to exist.” Alwi Shihab
