One of the most defining moments in Amin Soebandrio’s career came when he guided the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology to take a central role in Indonesia’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his leadership, the institute became a national hub for genomic research, virus sequencing, and the early development of the Merah Putih vaccine, marking a milestone in Indonesia’s scientific independence. This period not only tested his leadership and perseverance but also reaffirmed his lifelong belief that science must serve humanity, turning crisis into collaboration, and knowledge into hope for millions.
Amin Soebandrio continues to contribute beyond his academic and research roles as an active speaker, lecturer, and scientific advisor in various national biotechnology and health research programs. He frequently collaborates with universities, government agencies, and research institutions to promote science-based policy, strengthen research capacity, and inspire the next generation of Indonesian scientists.
Amin Soebandrio lives by the principle that “Science must serve humanity.” He believes true success in research comes from integrity, collaboration, and lasting impact on society. For him, science must be guided by ethics, discipline, and consistency never by ambition alone. He values teamwork over competition and sees mentorship as a scientist’s greatest legacy, as nurturing future generations ensures progress continues. With patience and long-term vision, he reminds that great discoveries take time and dedication. As he once said, “To be a scientist means to keep learning, improving, and seeking truths that benefit humanity.”
