Anies was raised in a family that emphasised on character education through role modeling and daily habituation. His parents instilled the values of compassion, generosity, honesty, diligence, equality, and respect for every individual. He was also taught to uphold knowledge, adhere to religious teachings, honour cultural traditions, and foster a deep love for the homeland.

Anies pursued his early education in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, before advancing into higher studies that shaped his intellectual and professional journey. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in 1995, where he developed a strong foundation in social sciences and public policy. In 1997, he was awarded a scholarship from the Fullbright Scholarship to continue his studies abroad. He completed his Master’s degree in Public Policy (M.P.P.) at the School of Public Affairs, University of Maryland, College Park in 1997. This academic exposure broadened his perspectives on governance, democracy, and policy-making. Driven by his commitment to academic excellence, Anies pursued further studies at the Department of Political Science, Northern Illinois University, where he obtained his Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Political Science in 2005. His doctoral research explored the dynamics of decentralisation, political participation, and democratisation in Indonesia, reflecting his deep interest in governance and civic engagement. Anies began his career in the United States as Research Manager at IPC, Inc. from 2004 to 2005 before returning to Indonesia as Senior Researcher at LSI and Director of Research at TII from 2005 to 2009. In 2006 he was appointed National Advisor for the Partnership for Governance Reform. In 2007 he became Rector of Universitas Paramadina until 2014, recognised as one of Indonesia’s youngest university leaders. He founded the Indonesia Teaching Movement in 2010, the Inspiration Class Movement in 2012, and the Indonesia Lights Up Movement in 2012. He later served as Minister of Education and Culture from 2014 to 2016 and as Governor of Jakarta from 2017 to 2022, introducing reforms in education, urban development, and sustainable mobility. He also held leadership roles as Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Provincial Governments in 2019 and Vice Chairman of the C40 Advisory Board in 2021. Since completing his governorship, Anies has remained active nationally and internationally as an academic and statesman.

Anies has initiated numerous social activities, both personally and through policies he introduced. During his tenure as a university rector, he established a scholarship programme for underprivileged students to pursue higher education. He also launched the Indonesia Mengajar programme, which trained the nation’s best graduates to serve as teachers in regions lacking quality educators. One of his most active and ongoing initiatives today is Aksi Bersama, a movement that reaches remote areas across Indonesia to build and repair damaged or broken bridges, ensuring that local communities retain access and continuity in their daily lives

Anies has received numerous awards and recognitions, both as an individual and during his tenure as a public official, at the national and international levels. Internationally, he was named one of the World’s 20 Future Figures by Foresight Magazine in Tokyo, Japan, in 2010, making him the only Indonesian on the list alongside global figures such as Vladimir Putin. Earlier, in June 2008, Foreign Policy Magazine selected him as one of the Top 100 Public Intellectuals, where he was the sole representative from Southeast Asia. At the national level, he was honoured with the National Integrity Award in 2013, presented in Jakarta by the Anti-Bribery Entrepreneurs Community (KUPAS) and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) for his qualities of honesty, accountability, vision, discipline, fairness, and social concern. During his governorship of Jakarta (2017–2022), Anies was credited with more than 50 individual awards and over 300 institutional awards for programmes and innovations implemented under his leadership. Among them, in 2021 he was included in 21 Heroes 2021, an international recognition highlighting global leaders and initiatives transforming urban mobility, where he was listed alongside figures such as Elon Musk of SpaceX and Tesla. In 2022, he was named the 72nd Lee Kuan Yew Exchange Fellow by the Government of Singapore, in recognition of his outstanding record and potential contribution to development in Indonesia as well as bilateral relations with Singapore

During his time as a student at Gadjah Mada University, Anies was actively involved as a member of the Islamic Students Association (Himpunan Mahasiswa Islam/HMI). In 2009, he founded the Indonesia Mengajar Foundation, a non-profit initiative aimed at improving the quality of education in Indonesia

Anies has attained numerous achievements throughout his career. As an academic, he became one of the youngest university rectors in Indonesia when he was appointed to lead Universitas Paramadina in 2007. In 2009, he founded Indonesia Mengajar, an initiative that recruits and trains the nation’s top graduates to teach in underserved areas, helping to improve access to quality education across the country. During his tenure as Minister of Education and Culture, he initiated revisions to the 2013 Curriculum, marking an important step in improving Indonesia’s education system. Later, as Governor of Jakarta, He introduced the JakLingko programme, which integrates public transportation by combining angkot (microtransit) into Jakarta's transportation system, he successfully increased the ridership of the Bus Rapid Transit system in Jakarta to one million per day within 3 years. He also built affordable housing in Jakarta by rebuilding Kampung Akuarium based on housing cooperatives, which received the 2024 World Habitat Award from UN-Habitat

Anies has a deep passion for gardening and caring for animals. At his home garden, he enjoys tending to fish, songbirds, and even a sheep that he raises personally. In addition to these activities, he also delights in watching movies as a way to relax and broaden his perspectives

For Anies, the most memorable personal moments are when the results of his hard work and policies can be directly felt by the people. He believes that the essence of leadership lies in the ability to bring about tangible changes that improve the quality of life for many. With a deep concern for social policies, Anies finds personal fulfillment in seeing the programmes he initiated create a positive impact, especially for the most vulnerable groups in society. For him, this is the true magic of life something that goes beyond personal achievements

Currently, Anies is a frequent speaker at various national and international forums. The topics he delivers cover strategic issues such as education, democracy, leadership and sustainable development. Through these activities, he not only shares his ideas but also contributes to fostering a broader public discourse. In addition, he actively shares his activities and perspectives through social media platforms such as YouTube and Instagram, allowing him to engage directly with a wider audience

For Anies, success is achieved through a combination of careful planning, hard work, and wholehearted execution. He believes that sincere and genuine prayer is also an essential part of the journey. For him, achievement should not stop at merely reaching one’s goals, but must go beyond them to create a broader impact on society.
