Dewi was born into a Minangkabau lineage, where women are the bearers of legacy and custodians of ancestral wealth. Her mother, an intellectual who studied librarianship in Albany, New York, strongly believed in the Banana Tree Philosophy, which teaches that true growth begins with independence, by moving away the young plants from the mother tree. Following this belief, her mother sent Dewi to be raised in the village among her maternal family. Her great uncle who raised her was a respected ulama and traditional leader. There, she learned the values of Islam, the power of matrilineal tradition, and the layers of cultural identity. In this space, where custom and faith sometimes align and sometimes conflict, Dewi found the roots of her beliefs and the strength of her heritage. Her great uncle also taught her public speaking skill.
