GRA - GREAT ANCESTORS

Prof. Dr. Haedar Nashir was born into a humble and deeply religious Muslim family in Bandung, West Java, on February 25, 1958. From an early age, he was nurtured in an environment rich with values of faith, education, and social devotion. His ancestors were not aristocrats or wealthy figures, but heirs to a long tradition of Islamic learning and spiritual discipline a legacy that would profoundly shape his character, worldview, and lifelong mission of service. In Haedar’s family, religion was not merely recited but lived. The values of honesty, simplicity, diligence, and sincerity were the moral compass passed down through generations. His forebears instilled in him the conviction that faith and knowledge must coexist that intelligence without morality is directionless, and worship without understanding brings no progress. Haedar often connects his own life journey to the spiritual lineage of Islamic reformers, particularly K.H. Ahmad Dahlan, the founder of Muhammadiyah. For him, Ahmad Dahlan represents not only an organizational founder but a spiritual and intellectual ancestor, whose reformist vision continues to illuminate modern Islamic thought. From Dahlan and other early pioneers of Muhammadiyah, Haedar inherited the spirit of Islam berkemajuan an enlightened Islam that promotes progress, rationality, and compassion. These ancestral values have become the foundation of his leadership. In every endeavor, Haedar emphasizes moderation, critical thinking, and justice principles he believes reflect the essence of Islam as a religion that uplifts humanity. His career as an academic, thinker, and the Chairman of Muhammadiyah is, in essence, a continuation of his ancestors’ mission: to make Islam a source of enlightenment and civilization for humankind. For Haedar Nashir, the idea of a great ancestor goes beyond lineage or bloodline. It embodies the inheritance of values and the spirit of struggle that transcend generations. He believes that every generation’s duty is not merely to remember the past but to continue its noble mission through action and dedication. From his spiritual forebears, Haedar inherited a simple yet profound truth — that the true dignity of life lies in the benefit one brings to others.

PMM - PERSONAL MAGIC MOMENTS

The life journey of Prof. Dr. Haedar Nashir is marked by a series of formative experiences that shaped his character, values, and intellectual path as one of Indonesia’s leading Muslim scholars and moral leaders. One of the most defining moments came during his early involvement in the Muhammadiyah Student Association (IPM) and later the Muhammadiyah Student Association for University Students (IMM). Through these organizations, Haedar learned the meaning of value-based leadership, social responsibility, and sincere dedication to public service. These formative years instilled in him a strong sense of discipline, humility, and the belief that Islam must serve as both faith and a guide for action. Another crucial stage was his time at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta, where he experienced an intellectually vibrant environment that embraced critical thinking and open discourse. It was there that he realized religion and science are not opposing forces, but complementary sources of enlightenment. From this realization grew his lifelong vision of Islam berkemajuan — a progressive interpretation of Islam that promotes rationality, inclusiveness, and compassion as foundations of civilization. His experiences engaging directly with communities across Indonesia also left a lasting impression. Witnessing the struggles and resilience of ordinary people inspired him to see Islam as a religion of enlightenment, one that liberates humanity from ignorance, injustice, and stagnation. Haedar also drew deep inspiration from prominent Muhammadiyah and national figures such as K.H. Ahmad Dahlan and Buya Syafii Maarif, whose sincerity and moral integrity taught him the essence of leadership rooted in service and example rather than power. These moments collectively shaped Haedar Nashir into a calm, thoughtful, and visionary leader — a man who combines intellect, spirituality, and humanity in harmony. Today, he continues to embody his lifelong mission: to make Islam a source of light, justice, and progress for the nation and the world.

ROS - REASON OF SUCCESS

The success of Prof. Dr. Haedar Nashir is rooted in the harmony of knowledge, faith, and moral integrity. For Haedar, leadership is not a privilege but a trust to be carried out sincerely. True success, in his view, lies in one’s ability to bring benefit to others. He balances rationality with spirituality, making him a moderate thinker who can engage diverse groups without losing his principles. Through example, simplicity, and integrity, Haedar Nashir shows that real achievement is not measured by status or wealth, but by how much meaning and light one brings to humanity.
