GRA - GREAT ANCESTORS

In Haidar Bagir’s family, the most cherished legacy lies in the values of scholarship, spirituality, and service to society. His father, Muhammad Bagir Al-Habsyi, was known as a respected religious scholar who emphasized the importance of knowledge and integrity, living a modest yet dignified life. From his mother, Gamar binti Toha bin Abdullah Assegaf, he inherited compassion, social concern, and a spirit of togetherness that became the foundation of the family’s life. The Al-Habsyi and Assegaf families also hold a strong tradition of religious scholarship and Islamic propagation. This instilled in Haidar Bagir the conviction that knowledge must always be accompanied by morality, and that true success is measured by one’s ability to benefit others. These values later shaped his vision of Islam of Love an understanding of Islam rooted in compassion, wisdom, and social service.

ACH - ACHIEVEMENTS

Every human being has certain moments in life that not only shape their character but also inspire many others. For K.H. Haidar Bagir, one of the most precious moments began when he was a student at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in the late 1970s. Amid the busy schedule of industrial engineering studies, he felt a deep intellectual and spiritual unease: was life merely about pursuing a degree and career, or was there a greater calling to serve society? This question became the beginning of his lifelong journey. A decisive turning point came when he founded Mizan Publishing in 1982. With very limited capital, he took the risk of building a publishing house not only for business purposes but also to carry a mission of enlightenment. He envisioned books that would broaden the horizons of Muslim thought, bridging classical Islamic scholarship with the challenges of modernity. This was a leap of faith a true “moment of courage” that eventually turned Mizan into one of Indonesia’s most influential publishing houses. Another significant moment came during his studies at Harvard University. In this international academic environment, he realized that Islam could be understood in a broader, more compassionate, and dialogical way. Engaging with scholars of diverse faiths and cultures, he discovered that Islam is not merely about law but also about love and compassion. This experience enriched his vision and became the foundation of the “Islam of Love” movement he later championed in Indonesia. Yet, perhaps the most touching moment came from his private life. He once shared that his greatest happiness was not when he earned his academic degrees or international awards, but when he saw his children grow with values of compassion, honesty, and generosity. For him, family is the true laboratory of love. It is there that he learned the best education is not words, but living examples. These moments his boldness in founding Mizan, his intellectual transformation at Harvard, and his joy within family life shaped Haidar Bagir into an inspiring figure. He has shown that true success is not merely measured by public achievements, but by sincerity, courage to take risks, and fidelity to the values of love. 2025

PMM - PERSONAL MAGIC MOMENTS

One of the most memorable personal moments in the life of K.H. Haidar Bagir happened during the early days of Mizan Publishing. In 1982, fresh out of ITB, he faced the harsh reality of having very limited capital. Many around him doubted whether a small publishing house focused on Islamic philosophy and thought could survive in a market that preferred lighter readings. Yet, Haidar turned those doubts into fuel for perseverance. There were times when Mizan could only print a few hundred copies of a book, and sales were uncertain. On one occasion, he even had to sell some of his personal belongings just to cover printing costs. Still, he held firmly to his conviction: great ideas and knowledge would always find their way. The most unforgettable moment came when he received a handwritten letter from a student who said that his life had changed after reading a Mizan publication. The letter was simple, but for Haidar, it was worth more than any financial profit. It affirmed that his struggle was not in vain. From that moment, he learned that staying true to values even in the face of hardship brings rewards far deeper than material success. For Haidar, this was the moment that taught him that “love for knowledge and the courage to take risks are the keys to creating change.” This story remains a reminder that sincere dedication, even when starting small, can create a profound impact on the lives of others.

ROS - REASON OF SUCCESS

The success of K.H. Haidar Bagir did not come instantly; it was built upon life principles that he consistently upheld throughout his journey. For him, business was never just about profit, but a means to enlighten and benefit society. This unwavering commitment to values and mission allowed Mizan to endure and thrive despite its modest beginnings. Another key to his success was his courage to take risks. Instead of following the popular path, he chose to publish books on philosophy, Islamic thought, and critical literature. These risks opened the way for a new intellectual space in Indonesia and positioned Mizan as a pioneer in the field. Equally important was his love of knowledge and lifelong learning. Haidar believed that true greatness could only be achieved through continuous learning. He pursued higher education at Harvard University and the University of Indonesia, while actively writing, researching, and engaging in intercultural dialogue. At the heart of his vision was the principle of love as the foundation of his movement. Through the Islam of Love initiative, he emphasized compassion, gentleness, and justice as the essence of religion. This was not only a message he preached but also a principle he consistently lived by in both personal and professional spheres. Finally, Haidar always sought to balance family and work. For him, true success could not be measured by public achievements alone, but also by the happiness of his family. Being a husband and father became a source of strength, grounding, and inspiration in his professional journey. Through these principles, K.H. Haidar Bagir demonstrated that real success is not defined merely by positions or awards, but by consistency, courage, love, and sincerity values that continue to inspire many to this day.
