"Refly Harun grew up in a family that instilled honesty, hard work, and the importance of education. His parents played a central role in shaping his character, while his son, Naufal Fikri—who has special needs—has been a source of inspiration, teaching him patience, sincerity, and the true meaning of perseverance. In his academic journey, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and Universitas Indonesia strengthened his legal ideals and critical thinking. Further studies at the University of Notre Dame in the United States and Universitas Andalas broadened his constitutional perspective and deepened his conviction that education is not simply a path to status but a duty to truth. It was in this spirit that he once remarked, “The international community would laugh if someone without academic experience, even without an undergraduate degree, were appointed to lead research institutions,” reflecting his belief that credibility and knowledge are the bedrock of leadership. His career at the Constitutional Court as an expert staff exposed him to the vital role of constitutional supremacy in safeguarding democracy. From that experience, he learned that the constitution must never bow to political interests. As he asserted in his dissertation, “What must be preserved is a constitutional election, one grounded in the values contained in the 1945 Constitution.” When he saw irregularities or injustice, Refly spoke boldly. On one occasion, he declared, “I am convinced that in recent days, the Constitutional Court judges have been under intervention by the invisible power… by the palace.” This statement highlights his insistence on judicial independence above political pressure. Even when standing against the mainstream, he emphasized that moral integrity outweighed political wins or losses. After a disputed election ruling, he reminded the public, “In general, we don’t need to be disappointed. We walk away with our heads held high. Morally, we do not need to feel defeated.” Through his family life, academic training, and professional career, Refly has consistently upheld values of justice, independence, and democracy.
