GRA - GREAT ANCESTORS

Behind every remarkable scientist lies a lineage of resilience and intellect. For Dr. Suharyo Sumowidagdo, the strength of his journey traces back to his Javanese heritage—a culture deeply rooted in humility, wisdom, and respect for knowledge. His ancestors were known as devoted educators and community figures, who believed that ilmu adalah cahaya kehidupan—knowledge is the light of life. Growing up in a family that valued both tradition and intellectual pursuit, young Haryo was nurtured with discipline and curiosity. His parents instilled in him a sense of purpose, perseverance, and reverence for truth—values that later became the moral compass of his scientific career. From his ancestral roots in Java came a timeless belief: that the pursuit of knowledge is not merely a profession, but a sacred calling to understand the universe and serve humanity. Their quiet strength and spiritual wisdom became the invisible hands that guided him—through the long nights of research, the complexities of particle physics, and the challenges of representing Indonesia on the global scientific stage In honoring his great ancestors, Dr. Suharyo Sumowidagdo carries forward not only their legacy of learning, but also their enduring message: “To seek truth is to honor those who came before, and to illuminate the path for those who will follow.”

CA - CAREER

The career journey of Dr. Suharyo Sumowidagdo is a story of perseverance, intellect, and devotion to knowledge—a journey that carried him from Indonesia’s soil to the most advanced frontiers of modern physics. After earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Department of Physics, University of Indonesia, he pursued his Ph.D. at Florida State University, USA, specializing in experimental particle physics. His doctoral work laid the foundation for his later contributions to one of humanity’s greatest scientific discoveries. Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Sumowidagdo joined the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland—the world’s largest and most prestigious physics research center. There, as part of the CMS Collaboration, he contributed to the historic discovery of the Higgs boson particle, a milestone that fundamentally deepened our understanding of how matter acquires mass. Returning to Indonesia, Dr. Sumowidagdo devoted himself to advancing the nation’s scientific excellence through his work at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). He currently leads the High Energy Physics Experiment Group within the Research Center for Quantum Physics, focusing on studies of fundamental particles, muon detectors, and muon tomography—an innovative imaging technology with potential applications in geology, archaeology, and national security. Beyond his achievements in research, he serves as a bridge between Indonesia and the global scientific community—sharing knowledge, mentoring young physicists, and fostering international collaborations. His numerous scientific publications, lectures, and academic contributions have inspired a new generation of Indonesian researchers to pursue science with integrity and purpose. Recognized internationally, Dr. Suharyo Sumowidagdo has been listed among the world’s top scientists (ranked 930 globally and 65 in Asia) according to the AD Scientific Index 2023. His career stands as a testament to Indonesia’s intellectual potential—a reminder that excellence in science transcends borders when guided by passion, perseverance, and the pursuit of truth.

ACH - ACHIEVEMENTS

The greatest achievement of Dr. Suharyo Sumowidagdo lies not merely in his scientific discoveries, but in his role as a pioneer who brought Indonesia’s name to the forefront of global research. As a member of the international scientific team at CERN, he contributed to the discovery of the Higgs boson particle—a milestone that transformed our understanding of how matter acquires mass and reshaped the foundation of modern physics. This achievement marked a defining moment for Indonesia: an Indonesian scientist standing shoulder to shoulder with the world’s leading physicists, proving that excellence knows no boundaries of geography. In addition to his contribution to CERN, Dr. Sumowidagdo has been recognized among the Top 15 Indonesian Scientists in the World and ranked 930 globally and 65 in Asia by the AD Scientific Index 2023. Yet for him, true accomplishment lies not in rankings or titles, but in empowering others through science—building a sustainable research culture and mentoring young minds to continue the pursuit of knowledge with integrity and purpose.“True achievement is not about what we discover, but how our discoveries inspire and empower humanity.”

PMM - PERSONAL MAGIC MOMENTS

For Dr. Suharyo Sumowidagdo, one of life’s most profound moments unfolded deep beneath the ground, within the sprawling tunnels of CERN in Geneva. Surrounded by the rhythmic hum of powerful accelerators and the quiet concentration of the world’s finest minds, he witnessed what scientists had long sought—the emergence of signals confirming the existence of the Higgs boson. It was a moment when years of research, sleepless nights, and countless trials converged into a single heartbeat of discovery. As data illuminated the monitors before him, Dr. Sumowidagdo felt a quiet awe—a realization that he was witnessing a piece of the universe revealing itself for the first time in human history. For him, it was more than a scientific triumph; it was a spiritual experience—proof that the pursuit of knowledge can connect humanity with the grand design of creation. In that instant, he understood that every equation, every experiment, and every unanswered question was a small step toward understanding the mind of the cosmos. That defining moment continues to guide his journey. Whether in an international laboratory or a classroom in Indonesia, he carries the same sense of wonder and purpose—the belief that curiosity is the bridge between human spirit and the mysteries of the universe.
